The Gold Coast SUNS have regrettably released Development Coach Ben Mathews from his contract, paving way for him to join the Melbourne Football Club.

Mathews joined the GC SUNS in 2012, his first role with an AFL club since retiring from the Sydney Swans at the end of 2008.

The former premiership player worked closely with GC SUNS NEAFL Coach Shaun Hart with the club's emerging players as well as facilitating the club's leadership program with the team's senior leaders.

GC SUNS General Manager - Football Operations, Marcus Ashcroft, thanked Mathews for the role he has played with the club and wished him well for the future.

"Ben has made a significant contribution in his twelve months with the club having played a major role with both our AFL and NEAFL teams."

"While we are disappointed to lose Ben, the Melbourne Football Club have presented him with a wonderful opportunity, and we wish him all the very best in the future," Ashcroft said.
