Danny Stanley’s blue-collar work ethic and resilient spirit has been honoured in front of a sold-out crowd at the Southport Sharks Events Centre tonight, with the rejuvenated midfielder capping off his sensational season by taking out the inaugural Player’s Player Award at the Gold Coast SUNS Club Championship.

Presented to the player judged by the entire playing group to have demonstrated their willingness to sacrifice for the team and perform selfless acts, Stanley cemented his spot in the midfield as a run-with specialist.

Tasked with nullifying the opposition’s most dangerous midfielders each week, Stanley surfaced as one of the Gold Coast SUNS leading players.

Missing the first four Premiership matches as he worked his way back from injury, Stanley went on to play in the remaining 18 senior matches – averaging 21 disposals and adding ten goals.

In a breakout match, Stanley picked up the top votes against Brisbane in the bi-annual QCLASH contest, after he kept Lions ace Daniel Rich to just 13 disposals.

Weeks later, he found himself manning Scott Pendlebury in the side’s upset victory over Collingwood, and shined as he minimised the AFL Coaches Association’s Player of the Year impact on the final result.

GC SUNS senior coach Guy McKenna told goldcoastfc.com.au to be recognised by your peers was the ultimate pinnacle in team sport.

“With the Best & Fairest, it is comes from the Coaches’ views and summing up your role for the team, but to be recognised by your team mates is more powerful,” he said.

“To know your team values what you do from game-to-game is a tremendous honour.”

McKenna said Stanley’s physical and mental strength to back himself in each week is what impressed him most this season.

“He’s been able to marry those together (physical and mental toll), and he’s just consistent. He plays within his abilities, and understands his role and that is ultimately what the players have seen fit to award him this Award.”
