An incredible 10-goal third quarter has laid the platform for a 64-point SUNS win which sees Josh Drummond’s side take outright top spot on the VFL ladder.
The SUNS kicked 13 goals straight throughout the second and third terms, highlighted by impeccable accuracy with nine straight majors coming from nine shots at one point, on its way to a comfortable 24.5 (149) to 12.13 (85) victory.
Three late goals before half-time, two of those to Mabior Chol, saw the SUNS earn a one-point advantage at the main break which ballooned to 54 points at the final change as Box Hill struggled to breakthrough rabid pressure from the hosts.
Chol, Alex Sexton and Sam Day all kicked two goals apiece during the third quarter onslaught before finishing with four apiece, while two goals in that term as well for Brodie McLaughlin contributed to a five-goal bag which sees him take the outright lead in the VFL goal kicking charts.
In defence, Caleb Graham and Jake Stein allowed little opportunity for the Hawks’ talls with Bodhi Uwland and Lloyd Johnston impressing with their run off half-back.
Connor Blakely (26 disposals) and James Tsitas (22 disposals) finished as the SUNS leading ball getters, also kicking a goal each.
Ned Moyle proved no match for the Hawks ruck duo, winning 44 hitouts to go with xx disposals and a game-high seven clearances.
SUNS Academy prospects Jake Rogers and Will Graham impressed in their respective VFL debuts, even combining for the latter's maiden VFL goal in the opening term.
The result earns the SUNS a two-point buffer at the summit of the VFL ladder ahead of a trip to Windy Hill to face Essendon next Sunday.
