Sam Flanders has posted the equal second-fastest 500-possession season in Suns history.
His 30 possessions against Port Adelaide at People First Stadium on Sunday in his 16th game of the 2024 gave him precisely 500 possessions and the SUNS’ 14th 500-possession season since the club’s formation in 2011.
Only Gary Ablett has reached this mark quicker – he got there in 15 games in 2012.
Flanders’ 16-game effort is the equal of Ablett in 2013 and Touk Miller in 2021 and sees him on track to post just the fifth SUNS season of 30 possessions a game or better.
Ablett averaged an astonishing 33.75 possessions a game in 2012 to head this list from Miller’s 33.8 in 2021, Ablett’s 31.2 in 2013 and Ablett’s 30.25 in 2011.
Eight SUNS players have had a total of 14 seasons of 500 possessions-plus – Ablett (3), Miller (2), Noah Anderson (2), David Swallow (2), Dion Prestia (2), Harley Bennell (1), Brayden Fiorini (1) and Flanders.
This includes six seasons of 600-plus – Ablett (3), Miller (2) and Anderson (1).
The Flanders milestone came as the SUNS erased the biggest black mark on the club’s all-time history with their 14-point win over against Port Adelaide on Sunday.
It ended a 14-game losing streak against the Power, which had followed the club’s first win over Port Adelaide at Football Park in 2011, when they came from 28 points down at three-quarter time, getting home when Justin Westhoff missed a long, angled shot at goal after the siren.
This leaves an 11-game losing streak against Melbourne which dates back to 2015 as the next big hoodoo assignment for the SUNS in Round 23 at People First Stadium.
The win over Port on Sunday was a first in SUNS colors for every member of the Gold Coast side, which collectively boasted an 0-52 record against the Power before last week.
This didn’t include the seven who played against Port for the first time - Bodhi Uwland, Ned Moyle, Sam Closehy, Will Graham, Joel Jeffrey, Lloyd Johnston and Jed Walter.
