The SUNS VFL return to People First Stadium this Saturday, in a curtain closer clash against the Northern Bullants directly following the SUNS’ AFL game.
After a slow start last week that left the SUNS just two points shy of a win 13.12 (90) to 13.10 (88), VFL Head Coach Tate Kaesler is confident the fresh side can turn things around.
“Last week we probably had some glimpses of the way we wanted to play and then some areas of the game that we know we can get better at, so one of those is contested ball,” Kaesler said.
“As soon as we were able to get that on our terms, the game flowed a lot better for us.
“It's just about being consistent and maintaining our level of performance throughout the whole game and not up and down throughout quarters.
“In saying that, at half-time, we addressed a few things and to the boys credit we put ourselves in a position with a minute to go to still win the game, so we know that we can do it.”
Aside from priming the players for AFL opportunities, Kaesler is looking forward to fostering connections over the 2025 VFL season.
“We had a lot of different players compared to last year, so obviously connection is going to be a big focus,” Kaesler said.
“The more these guys can play together the more you start to understand your teammates and what they do.
“We're probably going to go in with a very similar squad to last week, so it'll just give them another opportunity to play together and hopefully keep emphasising our brand, the way we want to play and how we want to be seen by our supporters as well.
“The more consistency and connection we can have with our group, I think the better result we're going to get.”
The VFL squad will catch a glimpse of the AFL before preparing for their first home game at 3:40pm.
“It's really exciting that we get to play after the AFL, so what we'd love is as many people to stay around and watch the VFL boys,” Kaesler added.
“These are our up and coming stars of the future and an important part of our footy club.“We think it's really important to get them behind them and hopefully we put on a good show for our supporters as well.”
