Gold Coast is on the hunt for a veteran player to add to its list, but it won't be Jarryd Roughead.

Stuart Dew will seek out Roughead following his farewell game against the SUNS at Marvel Stadium on Sunday, but the Gold Coast coach says it won't be to propose a contract for 2020 to his 2008 premiership teammate.

"No, I think he's well and truly happy with his lot," Dew said.

"He's very grateful for what he's been able to achieve and so he should be."

Dew said the SUNS were definitely in the market for a senior player though, but it "had to be the right person".

Brisbane coach Chris Fagan lured Luke Hodge out of retirement following the 2017 season, with Hodge having a huge impact at the Lions on and off the field in their unlikely drive to September this season.

Dew said it wasn't that simple though, and the SUNS had spent the second half of the season trying to identify which players might fit the bill, with both experience and skill.

"There's only one Luke Hodge," Dew said.

"He's one of a kind, he is. He's the perfect fit.

"Someone like a Jarrad McVeigh would have been the perfect fit; those guys that have been captains of their footy club, are very experienced, can play a number of positions, a real general."

The player currently on Gold Coast's list in most demand is out-of-contract star Jack Martin, and Dew says he's comfortable with negotiations being put off until season's end.

"Both parties have left it until the end of the year for further discussion," he said.

Dew denied Martin's contract status had any bearing on his decision to drop the 24-year-old back to the NEAFL last week.

Martin responded with a best-on-ground 32 disposals and two goals against unbeaten Brisbane, and will regain his position in the senior team if he overcomes a knock that limited his training on Thursday.

"In discussions with Jack, we agreed it was going to be a good thing for him to go back," Dew said.

"No player likes to be demoted to the NEAFL, but Jack went back with a fantastic attitude and I think that says something about him understanding the reasons why."
