Gold Coast Junior AFL clubs will get their chance to shine on the big stage this Sunday, playing curtain raiser matches on the Metricon Stadium main field before the Gold Coast SUNS match against Fremantle.
Six Gold Coast clubs will be represented in the action as part of the SUNS’ Celebrate GC Footy round for the first home game at Metricon Stadium.
Broadbeach, Mudgeeraba, Burleigh, Palm Beach Currumbin, Carrara and Coolangatta will all have teams competing in the U9’s and U10’s age groups on the day.
There are 20 teams in total and approximately 270 Gold Coast Junior footballers who will get the experience to play on the same field their footballing heroes play on.
“It’s fantastic for us to be able to showcase local junior footballers on the Gold Coast,” SUNS CEO Mark Evans said.
“It will be an amazing experience for these young footballers to play on the same ground that our senior AFL team play on and to be able to look into the stands and see their friends and family cheering them on.
“We’re committed to making an impact in the community and help develop and grow football in the region, and this is just one of the many ways in which we hope to achieve that.
“Who knows, maybe in the future we’ll see these young boys and girls running back out onto the field wearing a Gold Coast SUNS guernsey for our AFL or AFLW teams.”
Each team will play two 20-minute games which will commence at 1:45pm as the main gates at Metricon Stadium open.
The teams will be announced onto the field one by one and will run through the official race and banner to the Gold Coast SUNS club song just like the AFL players do.
The six northern Gold Coast clubs will be invited to play on the main field for the SUNS’ Round 8 clash against Melbourne at Metricon Stadium on May 11.
