Josh Corbett is flying after his first week of pre-season training, thriving under the heat of the Gold Coast sun.
Coming from Werribee in the VFL, Corbett would have rarely been exposed to the temperatures which confronted him on the training track last week, but says it’s helped push him to train harder.
“The boys have been supportive, sometimes you need a bit of a kick in the bum when it’s been pretty warm at the start of the week but yeah really enjoyed it from the start,” Corbett told SUNS TV.
“I really enjoy the heat, it’s been good the last couple of days.
“Particularly for the 2km (time trial), it seemed like it was a bit of a heat wave on the Coast so that was a nice welcome to it all but it’s been an easy adjustment.”
If the heat played any factor in Corbett’s performances, it wasn’t noticeable as the state-league signing tore up the track for the 2km time trial, finishing in third place.
He’s been touted for his running capacity at VFL level, which borders on elite for a tall forward.
“That’s one of my strengths, I work pretty hard at it in the off-seasons,” Corbett said.
“I always can do more to improve but I’m relatively happy the way I presented myself at the start.
“Now it’s just to hopefully build a stronger base going into games in the future.”
Corbett has been linked up with former Werribee teammate and ex-Docker Sam Collins at the SUNS and is starting to settle in to his new home off the field.
“I moved in with Tom Nicholls yesterday and he’s been great just showing me around and that sort of stuff,” Corbett said.
“Previously before that I was in Mark Evans’ house with Corey Ellis and Tim (Clarke).
“It made it easy, it’s been really good, everyone’s been so welcoming and made the move so easy.”
The 22-year-old isn’t shying away from his first season in the AFL, taking the number 19 guernsey for 2019 where he hopes to make an impact on the field.
“Fingers crossed, I’ll be playing in number 19 and ready to rock and roll,” Corbett said.
“I can’t wait to get into it all and hopefully you’ll be able to see some big strong marks and kicking a few goals through the big sticks, so bring it on.”
