School kids SHINE during Special event at Metricon Stadium
It might have seemed like organised chaos with handballs and kicks flying from every possible direction, but nothing else was to be expected as the club welcomed over 500 students from across the city to celebrate the biggest-ever Gold Coast SUNS SHINE Carnival at Metricon Stadium yesterday afternoon.
After spending the past four weeks highlighting the importance of healthy eating, beach safety and staying active through recreational sport, students from Jubilee State Primary School, Emmanuel College, St. Vincent’s, Robina Primary School and Mudgeeraba Creek State School were treated to a tour of the stadium precinct before taking part in the increasing-popular AFL playground where they were able to put their skills to the test.
Supported by both the Queensland Government and McDonald’s Gold Coast, the six-hour program has received an overwhelming response from the Gold Coast community so far this year after the schools program was embedded in the Grade 4 school curriculum in 2011.
GC SUNS Community Programs Manager Corey Bell, told goldcoastfc.com.au that the record-breaking attendance at the third SHINE Carnival for 2013 showed how important the community program had become for the participating students, teachers and parents.
“It is wonderful to see so many students enjoying the SHINE carnival day experience once again.
“To have over 2,500 students this year take part in the program this year has been great to see, and we look forward to continue working closely with our program’s schools to ensure they reap the benefits from undertaking their experience with us,” he said.
Despite the school program being fully-booked for 2013, expressions of interest are still being received.
