An adventurous Cairns upbringing is to blame for Charlie Dixon's sporadic season with the Gold Coast SUNS although it should not stand in the way of his homecoming on July 13.

Dixon’s career-best form has been stunted by a recurring injury, but the 22-year-old is confident of shaking off an ankle concern in time for their clash with Richmond at Cazaly’s in less than a month.

With the Gold Coast SUNS given time off this week, Dixon flew home to Cairns, where he told the Cairns Post his dodgy ankle can be traced back to his teenage years, and an accident while riding his bike in the northern suburb of Redlynch.

"I fell off my bike years and years ago and tore all the tendons and never did anything about it," he said.

"I was about 14 or 15. I did a silly jump and landed in a creek bed."

The fixture will be the third of three home games the Tigers agreed to move from the MCG.

Dixon, who had to take off a moon boot for yesterday's photo shoot at the Cairns ground, has helped the "visitors" to wins in both those clashes.

The Gold Coast this weekend has increased Dixon’s hopes of a return against Adelaide at Metricon Stadium on Saturday June 29th two weeks prior to the game in Cairns.

Before his latest setback, the Ruck forward had established himself as one of coach Guy McKenna's key men and helped the team to an impressive five wins this season.

"They just wanted me to get in there and compete and I've been able to play that role," he said.

"It's very frustrating; coming good and getting this mongrel injury that isn't going away.

"I got pretty angry when I did it again in the last 10 minutes on the weekend."

Richmond (seventh, 7-4) and Gold Coast (12th, 5-7) have been two of the more captivating teams.

"There's a good feeling at the club.

"We've been able to run out a whole game thanks to a good pre-season and we're just building," Dixon said.

"There's no reason we can't (beat Richmond again); we've been challenging most sides we've played all season."
