The Gold Coast SUNS and Campbell Brown have reached agreement that it would be in the best interests of both parties to release Campbell from his playing contract.

GC SUNS CEO, Travis Auld, said the decision to release Campbell Brown from his playing contract with the club came after a thorough and fair club investigation into events in Los Angeles.

The investigation confirmed that Campbell struck Steven May and fractured his jaw during an altercation but, contrary to media speculation, did not “king hit” him.  Steven May has since had surgery to repair the injury.

“Following this investigation, the Club, Campbell and his management have conducted extensive conversations and it has been agreed that Campbell and the Club part ways.”

Auld said the Board, represented by Chairman John Witheriff and fellow Director Bob East, deemed Brown’s actions were unacceptable after reviewing a detailed report of the incident.

“On this occasion, Campbell has let himself and the club down by failing to act in a manner that is in line with community standards and club expectations; as such, that is something the Gold Coast Football Club could not tolerate.”

The club recognises the contribution that Campbell has made to the GC SUNS and is disappointed that his time with the club has ended in such a manner.

“Campbell has made a significant contribution to our club and by extension, football in South East Queensland. He has been an extremely popular member of our team, which is why the outcome today is difficult and so incredibly disappointing.”

“Campbell has cooperated fully with the club’s investigation, and while he is understandably disappointed to be finishing his career with the Gold Coast on such a note, he has not, at any stage shirked his responsibilities.”

“Campbell has been in touch with Steven May post surgery and both have apologised to each other for their part in the incident.”

“Campbell would like to thank all that have supported him throughout his AFL career.”

The club has continually kept the AFL, AFLPA and Brown’s management updated on the progress of the investigation.

The GC SUNS will continue to provide the appropriate professional support services to Brown to assist him in transitioning to future employment.

In accordance with the standard AFL player contract, designed to protect the privacy of the players, no further club comment will be made on the incident.
