Just days after completing AIS-AFL Academy training on the Gold Coast, under newly appointed high performance coach Brad Johnson, Weller is already in full preparations for the 2014 Draft.
The 17-year-old midfielder, who has been heavily involved with the Club’s Academy Program, has been granted special permission by club officials to train with the GC SUNS playing list over the pre-season.
Training four days a week at the Club’s Metricon Stadium training facilities, Weller is looking to follow in the footsteps of Academy graduate Alex Sexton and brother Maverick, who is currently rookie-signed to St. Kilda after spending three seasons on the Gold Coast.
On his first day as an honorary AFL-listed player, Weller impressed conditioning staff with his 2km time trial efforts, crossing the line alongside the bulk of the playing list.
GC SUNS Academy Talent Manager & Coach – Jason Torney, told goldcoastfc.com.au training alongside with the Club’s senior players would be a great opportunity for Weller to test his athletic capabilities against seasoned AFL campaigners.
“Lachlan has impressed with his athletic ability but will be greatly tested in his football aptitude having to participate in game sense, decision making and scenario based training drills,” Torney said.
“His attitude and professionalism that he has shown within the Academy and Queensland Scorpions programs will impress his AFL peers.
“It’s a great opportunity to learn but also test himself against quality AFL talent.”
Torney said the summer training would put Weller in good stead ahead of the U18 national championships.
“Lachie’s program runs through until the end of January where he will hope the extra work has paid off and helps his SUNS Academy campaign which rolls over into the Queensland Scorpions U18 program.”
