Throughout the last week, Gold Coast SUNS players have travelled across Queensland and northern New South Wales as part of the 2015 Australia Post AFL Community Camp program.

On Monday, new recruit Nick Malceski and revered leader Jarrod Harbrow visited Palm Island in north Queensland. Often referred to as a tropical paradise, the picturesque island is an Aboriginal settlement on the Great Barrier Reef.

Given its remote location, our game holds next to no significance, something Harbrow and Malceski hope to change following their visit. Along with drawing awareness to the code, the pair spread the message of the importance of education and leading a healthy lifestyle.

“When we went through the classrooms, we spoke to the kids about healthy eating and how important education was,” Malceski told SUNS TV.

“We went through the diet we have and how important it is to eat healthy and drink healthy.

“We also explained how we had to have education before we got to where we were and it is important for life skills when we finish school.

“It was important for us to share our knowledge with that. Hopefully they took a little bit out of it.”

Following the SUNS impressive NAB Challenge victory over Geelong in Townsville, the pair boarded a light charter plane on Monday to help provide the young impressionable community with some lessons on life.

Harbrow, a product of North Queensland, echoed Malceski’s sentiments on spreading the word on the game of AFL.

“It’s obviously rugby league dominated up here so its good to spread the AFL code on the back of the game we played on Sunday against Geelong,” Harbrow said.
