This week has been a monumental time in the Gold Coast SUNS short but thrilling history, GC SUNS have completed their first and only VFL season and in just seven weeks will be reforming to begin training before they take to the field for the 2011 Toyota AFL season.

Several milestones have come into realisation, the club has recently released their new Guernseys, club song and nickname, they have had their first Best and Fairest awards and the new home of the GC SUNS is well underway. Gold Coast Stadium is due to be completed in mid-2011.

Gold Coast SUNS CEO Travis Auld said he is extremely proud of what the club have achieved this year, with some of the landmark moments including our first game in the VFL, our first win, the first airing of our club song and the signing of Karmichael Hunt who has singlehandedly changed the rules about what can and can’t be done in football.

“Not only are the on field achievements overwhelming but what blows me away is the off field efforts of everyone involved with the club, on any given day players are visiting schools, football clinics, the membership team is manning the merchandise tent, staff are stuffing envelopes,” Auld said.

“The club, top to bottom, whether the centre half forward, the receptionist or the boot cleaner, everyone has worked tirelessly and without complaint to ensure our successful arrival. It’s been a breathtaking effort, it speaks of our organisations fabric, of its heart and soul”.

Looking to the future the club has several more boxes to tick which includes the immense task of opening the Gold Coast Stadium, taking to the field in their first AFL match and the next few weeks will see the negotiations and recruitment of uncontracted players.

“The club has set strong foundations and the dream of being a fully fledged AFL team has now become a realisation.

“AFL is a tough, hard, demanding competition but rest assured the other Clubs are watching us and already planning how to beat us,” Auld said.

GC SUNS have over 8000 members to date, 42000 committed fans, numerous key sponsors, a soon to be completed world class stadium, a community that has embraced them and significant mentions in the local and national media in a cluttered sporting marketplace.
