It was the lauded at the time as Gold Coast's biggest scalp in its then-three-year history.

The competition's newcomers stunned Collingwood and the rest of the AFL when they posted a seven-point win over the Magpies at Metricon Stadium last season, marking the first time the SUNS had beaten a team in the top eight.

What made the round 17 celebration all the more amazing was the result was the consistency the young side showed throughout such a high intensity match, with Guy McKenna's senior team leading at every change.

2013 Brownlow medallist Gary Ablett was at his prolific and inspirational best, punishing Magpies coach Nathan Buckley for not assigning a tagger to him. Ablett went on to pick up a remarkable 49 disposals and two goals. On reflection, it was arguably his most complete performance in a SUNS Guernsey.

Jaeger O'Meara gave fans a glimpse of what they can expect in future years, with the eventual Ron Evans Medal (NAB AFL Rising Star award) winner turning in a stand-out display with 23 possessions, three goals and, significantly, eight tackles.

Midfield dynamos Harley Bennell, Jarrod Harbrow and Jared Brennan also impacted the play.

Magpie power forward Travis Cloke had a night to forget, kicking four behinds and failing to impact the scoreboard from five first-half shots on goal.

SUNS centre half-back Rory Thompson was assessed by club medical staff mid-way through the third quarter with an ankle complaint, but managed to play out the match.
