Rory Thompson has endured more than his fair share of injuries during the early stages of his career, but for the first time since he arrived at the Gold Coast SUNS as a 17-year-old zone selection, the key defender has begun the pre-season with the main group.
In the last few years, Thompson arrived for pre-season training in early November and spent a period of time in the rehabilitation group.
When the SUNS played in the Victorian Football League in 2010, Thompson missed the pre-season campaign due to shoulder surgery.
In 2011, the Southport product was restricted due to groin surgery, while in 2012 and 2013, ankle and hip issues ensured he was sidelined for a portion of those pre-season programs.
“I haven’t really started off in the main group since my first year, I think,” Thompson told the Weekend Bulletin.
“In other years I’ve come back straight into rehab or finishing off rehab, but this is my first year coming into the main program with the main group.
“I’ve been lucky to get away with no surgeries or anything needed this time. I’ve had some fresh time over the break and I’m feeling good now.”
Thompson had a breakout season in the backline in 2013 when he won the most improved award at the SUNS’ Club Champion event.
