The Gold Coast SUNS and Guy McKenna have today finalised a contract extension that will see McKenna coach the GC SUNS until the end of 2015.

GC SUNS CEO Travis Auld said the club had a strong focus on stability and believed McKenna had earned the contract extension.

“We are really pleased to confirm that Guy has agreed to a contract extension that will see him continue as senior coach through to the end of our fifth season in the AFL,” Auld said.

“During our establishment years, the role of senior coach hasn’t been easy and Guy has done everything possible to ensure our players, coaches and the club prosper in the future, and we are now starting to see this come to fruition.

“As we have said all along, we believe in stability. Internally, we’re very clear about where we’re at and what we need to achieve going forward. Extending Guy’s contract now gives us the best chance to reach those targets.”

McKenna, who joined the GC 17 bid team in 2008 before coaching the GC SUNS in their inaugural AFL season in 2011, said he is excited about the future.

“I’m really pleased that the club has continued to show faith in me and the overall direction of the football department,” McKenna said.

“We’ve had to build our football club from scratch, endeavouring to get ourselves in a position where we currently find ourselves; we now need to continue that and progress up the ladder.”

McKenna’s young team managed six victories throughout his first two seasons, but in 2013 the team was far more competitive notching up eight wins.  The SUNS have won nine of their last 14 matches at Metricon Stadium.
