In-form key defender Steven May has been ruled out of this Saturday’s Locals Round clash against Port Adelaide after sustaining a hamstring injury following the side’s loss to Carlton at Etihad Stadium.
It is an unfortunate blow for the Northern Territory product, with May having established himself as one of Gold Coast’s most important players this season.
The young defender currently leads the competition in one-percenters with an average of 10 per game, with a potential All Australian selection highlighting his amazing rise in the AFL.
GC SUNS high performance manager, Stephen Schwerdt updated goldcoastfc.com.au on the extent of May’s injury.
“It’s unfortunate for Steve, he’s had a sensational year with what’s he’s done and he’s done a power of work,” Schwerdt said.
“He strained his hamstring late in the game on the weekend and will be out for a few weeks.
“It’s bad luck for Steve, but someone else gets a chance now.”
Meanwhile, Trent McKenzie will be taken through concussion testing this week but all early indications suggest the rebounding half-back will be available for senior selection.
“We’ll follow the normal procedures there… he’ll get assessed then take a number of steps and a test later in the week.
“He’s ticked off the boxes so far but still has a bit to go, that (decision) will be finalised on Thursday or Friday.”
Michael Rischitelli also looked worse for wear after sustaining a knock to his leg, but remains a chance to back up for this weekend’s game.
“Yeah pretty well so far,” Schwerdt said when asked on Rischitelli’s health.
“He got subbed out of the game and could have continued but was a little limited so the decision was made to sub him out.
“(We’re) pretty confident he will come up and will be available to play.”
