NAB Cup final open training session
Despite the wild weather being experienced across the Gold Coast, hundreds of Gold Coast SUNS members and fans turned out to watch as the team trained for the final time ahead of tomorrow nights NAB Cup opener against the Brisbane Lions and Hawthorn at Metricon Stadium.
Held as part of the “Massive Membership Sign-on Day” a number of newest members were introduced to the squad who took time to meet their newest fans and assist with the membership telethon.
Despite the inclement weather, Coach Guy McKenna was pleased with the session and by the playing lists attitude as they wrapped up their NAB Cup preparations.
“Despite being the second youngest team in the competition, and the second in terms of least amount of games played, we believe the pre-season the team has endured and after being in the competition for three years they’ll be able to run out games longer.”
With the player’s fitness capacity having advanced significantly over the summer, Bluey was quick to credit the GC SUNS new High Performance Team for their work over the summer.
“From what I’ve seen over the pre-season with Stephen Schwerdt and our fitness regime, we haven’t lost too many blokes (to injury) so hopefully some of that off-field efforts that we’re seeing on the training track will transition to strong performances on-field,” McKenna said.
This weekend’s matches will also hold significance for Queenslanders around the State, with Saturday 23 February being dubbed “Australia Day II” after tropical Cyclone Oswald ruined the national holiday for many across Queensland and Northern New South Wales.
GC SUNS members and fans are encouraged to celebrate Australia day by adding a splash of green and gold to their red match day outfits.
The NAB Cup’s official charity partner in 2013 – Red Cross, will also be collecting donations for the flood relief appeal throughout each of the three scheduled games.
Supporters can also donate to the 2013 Queensland Floods Appeal by visiting www.redcross.org.au or by calling 1800 811 700.
