An excited bunch of students, from a host of different multicultural backgrounds, were greeted by Karmichael Hunt and Joel Wilkinson at Metricon Stadium, as the AFL Multicultural Ambassadors helped kick off the 2013 Gold Coast SUNS Diversity Cup.

Just over 50 students from Helensvale State School and The Murri School Brisbane participated in the schools program, with the Diversity Cup aiming to bring school-aged youth from different cultural backgrounds together through sports such as AFL.

The AFL playground, set up by AFL Queensland, proved to be a big hit – with the 20m sprint, radar kick and gauntlet among the most popular activities on the day.

After watching the Gold Coast SUNS last training session of the year, the students engaged in their own form of AFL training, taking to the fields for an AFL 9’s game.

GC SUNS Diversity Engagement Officer – Michael Gugliotta, told goldcoastfc.com.au the schools program had been a tremendous success.

“It was exciting for the GC SUNS to host such culturally diverse backgrounds and then to see the some of these barriers/ differences slowly breakdown while having fun and playing football was great for all involved”

“The GC SUNS are lucky to have ambassadors such as Wilko Hunt Harbrow. They really engage the kids and deliver some great messages around equality and teamwork.”
