The AFL swore in a new chief executive on Thursday, but only for a day, as Andrew Demetriou declared teenager Michael Yunupingu the man in charge of Australia’s most popular sporting code as winner of Generation One’s “CEO for a Day” competition.

“He's very wise for his years, he's already given me some early advice which I've taken on board and he's threatened that if I don't implement them then there's going to be trouble," Demetriou said.

Writing to Generation One, a movement aimed at bringing all Australians together to end the disparity between Indigenous and Non-indigenous Australians, Yunupingu shared his aspirations of one day becoming a CEO for the AFL, a dream that became reality at AFL House yesterday.

While his time in the top job might have been short lived, the 15-year-old Western Australia has some big plans for the game, and he had some friendly advice for long-serving umpire boss Jeff Gieschen.

“Calm down on the umpire decisions,” he said.

Although he might be a little way off needing a full job anytime soon, Michael’s one day at the helm of Australia’s biggest sport has given him something to aspire too.

“I’m just really happy to be here. I can’t believe I’ve met the CEO of the AFL.”
