He doesn’t own a surf board and the only wax he uses is in his hair, however Gold Coast SUNS star Karmichael Hunt jumped at the chance to team up with the Gold Coast Surf Academies Surf Grom program at Currumbin Alley.
Targeting five to twelve year olds, Karmichael said it was imperative kids living on the Coast had solid surf awareness and equally as important that they live a healthy lifestyle.
It’s great to see so many people out here having fun and I think it’s a great initiative, I’m not a surfer myself, but I have just had a daughter and in a couple of years time I will probably be down here on the beach watching her paddle around in the water, so I’m happy to be down here with Nathan to get involved in some activities.“I’d much rather see kids running around on the beach and in the water than sitting in front of the television and I am all for activities as long as the kids are having fun and are active, the main thing is that there smiles all over these kids faces and it’s good to see.”
Nathan Bock on the other hand is an avid surfer who hasn’t been able to paddle out at his favourite Gold Coast break since shattering his leg during the GC SUNS match against the Fremantle Dockers at Metricon Stadium.
It’s certainly hard being down here today, surrounded by surf boards and all of these keen little Grommets and not being able to get out there for a paddle with them, but it’s certainly one of the things I am really looking forward to doing again once my leg has healed and I am back playing footy. It’s certainly a fantastic initiative though and I’m wrapped to be able to at least support it from the beach. Both Bock and Karmichael have worked tirelessly for the Gold Coast SUNS in the Community this season with the Club this month passing it’s targeted contribution of five thousand hours, Karmichael’s favourite?.
Probably the multi cultural work that we have done throughout the year, it’s just good to see so many different faces playing the game and especially young kids that have never tried the sport before and they turn up to these events and they hand ball and kick a Sherrin around, it’s definitely been great to see and I’m looking forward to forwarding that commitment next year.“We want to give back to the community, that’s one of our pillars and it’s great to be able to make a difference, as small as it might be.”
The Gold Coast SUNS will now enjoy a short break before returning ahead of the Clubs high altitude training Camp in Arizona.
