Gold Coast midfielder Lachie Weller cannot wipe the smile off his face after a milestone win on home turf.
The Gold Coast SUNS Academy alumnus celebrated 100 games at Metricon Stadium on Sunday.
It is a special record for the junior pathway program, which has seen many players graduate to Gold Coast’s AFL list over the years.
Weller told SUNS Media the 63-point victory against North Melbourne in front of home members and fans was something he’d remember for a long time.
“It was a milestone and I am grateful for all the texts I have got, all the people I have met along the way and the support the club has given me," he said.
“The Academy was great and I wouldn’t be here without Jason Torney and the boys."
Midfielder Ben Ainsworth, who was voted Austworld Player of the Round, said it was nice to end a six-match winless streak for Weller’s hundredth.
“After a few troubling weeks, it was a great opportunity to prove ourselves and get a win on the board, especially for Lachie,” he said.
With grit and determination, Weller and Ainsworth are preparing to take on the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba in the QClash on Wednesday September 9.
Ainsworth said he respected the Brisbane Lions, who are sitting third on the ladder, but was confident the team could come out on top if they replicated the type of form they showed against North Melbourne.
“They are an oiled rig at the moment; however, with planning this week, we hope to get the job done,” he said.
“Make sure you stick with us and hopefully you will see results.”
