Gold Coast SUNS coach Guy McKenna said his team wants to show Greater Western Sydney it is still “big brother” when the sides meet on Saturday at Metricon Stadium.
He also believes this will be the start of a ten-year rivalry between two soon-to-be “powerhouse” teams, chock-full of some of the best young talent to enter the AFL in recent seasons.
While the two expansion clubs will be inextricably linked and compared over that period, given the draft concessions both sides received and their entry to the AFL over successive seasons, McKenna said rivalries have already developed between the two playing groups.
“Between the players, it’s certainly built up,” McKenna told Fox Sports News.
“A lot of these boys have been drafted around the same age, so they’ve got a lot of mates at either club. They’re all quality kids, as well; they’re all competitors.
“They beat us in the first year, we won the last three. The boys are pretty keen to make sure we’re still known as big brother.”
McKenna was wearing the blue and gold of West Coast when gun Eagles centre half-back, Glen Jakovich, started a decade-long battle with Kangaroos colossus Wayne Carey. Now he gets to witness the birth of potentially the next great midfield rivalry from the coaching box, with SUNS young gun Jaeger O’Meara going head-to-head with Giants first-year star Josh Kelly for the first time.
“We’re going to see Josh Kelly running around on Jaeger O’Meara for 10 or 15 years.
“I think with the two expansion clubs we’re going to see a lot of rivalry between individual players in those sides. Rory Thompson on Jeremy Cameron, for example.
“The match-ups, you just go through them all, it’s going to be super.”
While the teams aren’t at the pointy end of the ladder just yet, the fourth-year SUNS mentor said fans can expect to see the clubs battling it out at the business end of the season on a regular basis in the years to come.
“You would think these two sides keep their list together, they’re going to be a powerhouse for the next ten years.
“Fingers crossed we can get up to the Geelong-Hawthorn rivalry.
“As long as it’s (Metricon Stadium) packed, and it’s rocking, the noise coming out, it will be a fantastic environment.”
Saturday’s clash is the SUNS’ last home game until they tackle the Western Bulldogs at Metricon Stadium in round 10.
