THERE is a new Maverick in town.

The Gold Coast Football Club was the envy of every other AFL club in the land recently when they signed highly impressive youngster Maverick Weller.

The 17-year-old has just returned home to Tasmania after a week on the Gold Coast following an invitation from coach Guy McKenna.

Weller came to the Coast to meet his new teammates and to get a feel for the club he will soon call his own.

Although it was difficult initially, a trip to the beach with GCFC vice captain Charlie Dixon, Matt Fowler, Todd Grayson and Brad Rees helped break the ice.

"The first day was hard," he said.

"It felt like they were looking at me like `who is that?' a little bit. But the next day we had a day off and I got around with a few of the lads and went down to the beach and hung out.

"By Thursday I really felt a part of it."

The hard-at-it midfielder, who will move to the Coast in November, said he was very impressed by the set-up at the GCFC.

"It is exciting. There are a lot of people involved and still so many people left to meet," he said.

Coming from the cold of Tasmania will be a big shock to the system for the youngster with the Top Gun name who is destined to become a cult hero at the club.

"Obviously it is a lot warmer and a lot easier to train here because you feel like doing it a lot more," he said.

"It is going to be tough pre-season in the summer but we will see how we go."
