May sweating on match review committee results as he fights for a first team recall
Key forward Steven May’s chances of a senior recall after the mid-season break have been given a massive boost, following his six goal effort against the UWS Giants in Blacktown, Sydney on the weekend.
It was the inspired performance Coach Shaun Hart had been looking for from the talented Northern Territorian as he battles to reclaim his place in the Club’s top 22.
"Steven kicked six goals and was a big factor through each of the four quarters,” Shaun Hart told goldcoastfc.com.au.
“He came hard at the footy, marked in contests, provided great leads and finished nicely around the sticks.”
“He was just terrific all day long.”
The news was well-received by senior coach Guy McKenna and his coaching staff, after the club’s match committee’s decision to omit May from the senior team after a number of inconsistent matches.
The 190cm swingman could be a welcome addition for the Club’s next match against the Adelaide Crows with the GC SUNS suffering a number of injuries to key personnel during their clash with Essendon on Saturday night.
Despite his class and polish around goals in the Gold Coaster’s come from behind 21-point victory over the Giants, Hart said May could have added to his game-high scoreboard tally.
“Probably could have kicked seven, eight or nine from the shots he had but he was still terrific from the first bounce tot the final siren,” Hart said.
The 2001 Norm Smith Medallist praised May’s second and third defensive efforts during contested stoppages.
“He definitely worked on ground level and attacked the game both offensively and defensively,” he said.
“Steven had an all-round game yesterday and was a great contribution to our squad.”
May must now wait on the results of the NEAFL’s match review panel, after he was reported for two separate incidents during the early morning encounter.
“With Tom Lynch going down he’s a massive chance for a senior recall, but we’ll just have to wait and see how it all unfolds after the bye round.”
May made eight AFL appearances for 2013 and has seven goals to his tally.
