The Gold Coast SUNS will head to Townsville, Mackay and Byron Bay as part of the 2015 Australia Post AFL Community Camps, continuing the club’s ongoing efforts in North Queensland and Northern New South Wales.
The full playing list will spread to some of the towns’ regional and rural areas for a two-day community camp, holding skill clinics and completing school appearances from March 2-3.
General Manager of Stadium, Consumer & Community – Kelly Ryan, welcomed next year’s community camp schedule.
“We are thrilled to have been given an opportunity to build on our commitment to North Queensland and Northern New South Wales by holding our annual community camp in Townsville, Mackay and Byron Bay next year,” Ryan said.
“As a club, we have established an ongoing presence in these respective communities, and next year’s AFL Community Camp will only help take our relationship with North Queensland and the northern rivers catchment from strength to strength.
“We look forward to giving back to our fans and thanking them for their continued support of the GC SUNS.”
The Australia Post AFL Community Camps will see more than 800 AFL players will take the game to regional and rural communities around Australia and New Zealand in the lead up to the 2015 Toyota AFL Premiership Season.
AFL General Manager People Customer and Community, Dorothy Hisgrove said the Australia Post AFL Community Camps were about players giving back to the community and sharing with fans their passion for Australia’s Game.
“The Australia Post AFL Community Camps are a significant event in the AFL pre-season calendar as they provide fans across Australia with an opportunity to meet and engage with their favourite players and clubs.
“Players will carry out training sessions and visit schools, local football clubs, nursing homes and hospitals, bringing people together and promoting participation in footy at a grass roots level.
“Fans are the most important people in our game and these camps are a terrific chance for AFL players to acknowledge their loyalty and support first-hand,” said Ms. Hisgrove.
For the third consecutive year, the Gold Coast SUNS will host a NAB Challenge match in Townsville, when the playing list meets Geelong on March 1 at Tony Ireland Stadium.
