Gold Coast SUNS Captain Gary Ablett has been named in the 40-man squad that is in contention for the 2012 Four'N Twenty AFL All Australian Team following the final meeting of the All Aistralian selection panel.
Twenty four members of the squad have never previously been named as an All Australian while the SUNS skipper has been selected in the past five consecutive All Australian teams, last year named as Captain.
Fremantle Captain Mathew Pavlich is the most decorated player in the preliminary squad ahead of Ablett with Geelongs Corey Enright named in the last four consecutive teams.
Ablett who is Favourite to win the Gold Coast SUNS Club Champion award at the Clubs black tie awards dinner this Saturday night has had a stellar year for the Gold Coasters wracking up impressive statistics during his twenty appearances for the SUNS this season.
Gary Ablett, Gold Coast SUNS. All Australian 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 (vice-captain), 2011 (captain). 20 games in 2012. 389 kicks (First in the AFL), 61 marks, 287 handballs (Tenth in the AFL), averaging 19.5 kicks, 3.1 marks, 14.4 handballs. The All Australian selectors were not asked to nominate the leading players in each section of the field -- forwards, defenders and midfielders / ruckmen – but simply to name the best players of the season. However, the final team of 22, to be named on Monday September 17 in Melbourne, is selected to best fit team balance as if to play a match.
Selection in the Four’N Twenty All Australian team is recognition for a tremendous year of football, as the best player in your position across the entire competition, AFL CEO Mr Andrew Demetriou said.
"All Australian selection is a great honour also because of the quality of those players you have competed against, to win your spot, and the selectors nominted the 40-best players of the year to highlight the outstanding players who are in contention for selection as one of the elite players of the season," he said.
The All Australian Selection panel is Andrew Demetriou (chairman), Adrian Anderson, Kevin Bartlett, Luke Darcy, Danny Frawley, Gerard Healy, Glen Jakovich and Mark Ricciuto.
