2015 NEAFL grand finalist Aspley have defeated the Gold Coast SUNS reserves by 22 points in their pre-season practice match at Metricon Stadium on Saturday.
The Hornets took control of the contest in the second term, slamming on four goals to the SUNS’ one and never looking back to run out victors 11.8 (74) to 7.10 (52).
“Look, they’re a pretty impressive side,” NEAFL coach Stephen Daniel told SUNS TV on Monday afternoon.
“We were really happy. Our first quarter, we kicked 3.3 unfortunately to their five straight and then our second quarter we were really disappointed probably with our efforts and the way we went about it.
“So the boys addressed that at half time. We had a good chat about it, we came out in the third quarter and we were a hell of a lot better but unfortunately I felt we didn’t get rewarded for our effort. We kicked I think it was 1.6 so that was disappointing in itself because we really did turn the game around.
“I thought Keegan Brooksby was fantastic in that quarter, we moved him into the ruck and he certainly changed the game around.
“Then the last quarter, I think we outscored them by four or five points so overall you come away fairly pleased and pretty excited I suppose about the up and coming year.”
The SUNS reserves face the Brisbane Lions reserves in their final NEAFL practice match this Saturday before the team’s season opener in Darwin on April 2.
