The Gold Coast SUNS will be without Wil Powell for the remainder of the 2022 AFL Premiership Season after scans revealed a fracture and ligament damage to his ankle.
The young defender left the field on a medicab in the third quarter of the match against the Adelaide Crows at Metricon Stadium on Sunday, after his right leg was caught awkwardly under his body in a tackle attempt.
Powell was taken to hospital on the night, with ensuing scans revealing substantial damage to his right ankle.
“It was a pretty severe injury, he’s dislocated and fractured his ankle with a bit of ligament damage in there as well,” GC SUNS General Manager of Football Performance Wayne Campbell told the Qscan Injury Update.
“He spent the night in hospital last night, will be operated on today and will spend a couple more nights in hospital.
“He’s tough and he’s much-loved and we’re looking after him as best we can.
“We’ll put him through a rehab process and are really confident in our medical and high performance department to get him back, but he’ll sit out the rest of the year and we’ll get him up and going for pre-season next year.”
A further Qscan Injury Update with information on Connor Budarick and others will be available tomorrow.
