The Gold Coast SUNS will blood its fourth AFLW debutant of Season Seven with SUNS Academy and Southport Sharks product Giselle Davies confirmed to feature in Sunday’s Round 2 clash against West Coast at Metricon Stadium.
A tall defender-turned-forward with excellent foot skills and a strong overhead mark, Davies earns her first shot at an AFLW level after been taken with Pick 30 in the 2021 NAB AFLW Draft.
“After coming up through the SUNS Academy, it’s a dream come true to have the chance to pull on the guernsey and represent this club in the AFLW,” Davies said.
“This club and this group of teammates mean a lot to me and I can’t wait to play alongside them on Sunday.
“Even better, to have the opportunity to play my first game at Metricon Stadium in front of friends and family will be really special.”
The 19-year-old has previously represented Queensland at an Under 19 level as well as being an Under 15 All-Australian.
Head Coach Cameron Joyce says he admires the manner in which the 19-year-old has gone about her development, now in her second season at the SUNS.
“Giselle is one of the great examples that hard work pays off," Joyce said.
“She wasn’t able to break into the team last season, but she’s put in the hard yards, kept working and it’s that work ethic along with her recent performances that have earned her this opportunity.
“It’s another well-deserved chance for a player who has risen through the ranks of our Academy and showcasing their talents in our AFLW squad.”
The SUNS will name its full Round 2 team to face the Eagles on Saturday evening.
