TRUE BLUEY with GCFC coach Guy McKenna

IT seems like every time I open a newspaper lately I read a story on the Gold Coast Football Club 'missing out' on another player because they have re-signed with their current club.

You might think I get frustrated by it but I don't -- in fact I just sit back and laugh.

We would need to be operating on a salary cap of $35 million if we had been chasing all the great players we have been linked to.

We are open to hits when it comes to the player market because we are not going to speak publicly about what we are doing.

But I can honestly say our club has not taken too many hits when it comes to the players we are actually interested in.
As a coach looking at what we have got coming in, I am very comfortable with where we are at from what list manager Scott Clayton is telling me.

We are still in conversation with more players than the very, very small percentage who have told us: 'Thanks, but no thanks'.

All along we have said we will target the best available talent.

But what we also have to weigh-up is how the likes of Charlie Dixon and Zac Smith are developing now.

Then you have to throw the draft and the uncontracted players into the mix. But that can all change in a heartbeat depending on the progression of our current players.

Commentator Gerard Healy made some comments about the club in a Melbourne newspaper last week.
He believes the Gold Coast won't be able to recruit any players.

But does he actually know what we are trying to do? No.

I didn't read the full article because I knew none of us were quoted in it and he probably didn't get any information out of any of us.

He's entitled to his opinion but if he had spoken to someone at the club, I am sure he would think we are that far removed from the old Brisbane Bears that it's not funny.

The club was thrilled with last Saturday's VFL win over Geelong.

The Cats were playing a lot of kids as well and had only won one game for the season, so we can't get too ahead of ourselves.

But there were certainly some good signs there. The fact we had seven shots to two in the final term was a great sign when you consider it has been the opposite in the first few rounds this season.

We have a bye this weekend so it is a good opportunity for the boys to go home and see their families.
Then they will front back up for a big game against Collingwood in a fortnight.
