The Gold Coast SUNS will open its 2023 AFL Campaign on the Gold Coast in front of fans for the first time since 2017 with a Round 1 clash against the Sydney Swans.
The SUNS will host the 2022 Grand Finalists at Metricon Stadium on Saturday, March 18, 7.00pm AEST first bounce.
It will be the first time Gold Coast has opened an AFL campaign at home since Round 1, 2020 and the first with crowds in attendance since three seasons prior.
The opening round fixtures were this morning confirmed by the AFL with the home and away season getting underway on Thursday, March 16 when Richmond face Carlton at the MCG
Following consecutive season openers in Perth in 2021 and 2022, Gold Coast SUNS Chief Executive Mark Evans says it’s fantastic for the club to open its campaign at home.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity for our players to start a fresh season at Metricon Stadium in front of our passionate members and supporters,” Evans said.
“As we enter a phase of pushing to contend and win, there’s no better challenge to start our season than against one of last year’s Grand Finalists.”
The SUNS have held the edge over the Swans in recent times, winning three of the last four meetings, including the last at Metricon Stadium in Round 6, 2021.
