Lynch rises to challenge against Bulldogs
POWER FORWARD Tom Lynch was a stand-out performer for the Gold Coast SUNS in the side’s 32-point victory over the Western Bulldogs at Metricon Stadium this afternoon.
Standing tall in the centre circle after ruckman Zac Smith sustained an ankle injury during the opening term.
The 200cm spearhead willingly accepted the challenge and provided a solid presence in the ruck working alongside swingmen Jared Brennan and Sam Day, the trio minimising the impact of the Bulldogs hit-out specialist Will Minson.
Speaking exclusively with goldcoastfc.com.au after the match, Lynch was humble, instead choosing to applaud Brennan and Day for the way the duo rose to the challenge when the club needed them most.
“I had to go in the ruck a bit, but Jared was super as well so between him, Sam and I we were able to get across the line and help the team out in the centre circle,” Lynch said.
With a passionate crowd of 13,520 on hand to cheer the GC SUNS home, Lynch said the playing group were wrapped to have secured consecutive victories for the first time in clubs history at home.
“It was good for us to get two wins in a row, obviously the Bulldogs are pretty good competition being third in clearances in the AFL, so it was really good for us to get out on our home-ground and show the fans we can get the win.”
Senior coach Guy McKenna was also full of praise for his developing charges post-match.
“There understanding now that when the pressure comes to them that they can work through it themselves, I don’t think we did it early on but into the 2nd quarter and into the second-half I thought we were better at it,” said McKenna.
“We still have a massive step to go, in particularly when we prepare to compete against Hawthorn and Geelong in the next two weeks, but our mental maturation will help us absorb that.”
With Hawthorn having made easy work of the GWS Giants in Tasmania this afternoon Lynch knows the Gold Coasters face a huge task next weekend however said the players would take a massive boost of confidence from today's result.
“It’s going to be a big test against Hawthorn at the MCG,” Lynch said.
“It’s really exciting to see where we’re at and there the no. 1 team in the competition so it’s going to be a great challenge for the boys.”
