If his left hand was still causing him any discomfort, veteran Pearce Hanley certainly didn’t let it show at training on Monday morning.
The Irishman looked unhampered as he entered his second week of full preseason training since he broke his hand in the International Rules series last November.
Hanley was seen wearing strapping tape on his hand, but was still able to participate in everything senior coach Stuart Dew threw at the group.
“I’ve just been back in to doing some tackling and some contact and pretty much doing every drill,” Hanley told SUNS TV.
“It’s good being back out there with the boys and doing a full session.”
Hanley was limited to light training duties prior to Christmas which Dew told the media was simply precautionary.
The 29-year-old has been self-treating his injury with a strengthening ball and also had to make adjustments in the way he went about training.
“I didn’t have a lot of treatment it was more just me being modified in the gym and on the training track,” Hanley said.
“With the scar tissue I’ve pretty much just been massaging my own hand just making sure that I don’t have to get operated on again.”
With Hanley back in the fold the SUNS injury ward shrinks even smaller.
Harrison Wigg (ankle) is still in rehab however Callum Ah Chee (hand) has resumed non-contact training with the squad.
Monday morning’s training session consisted of skills and conditioning followed by more intense gameplay scenarios overseen by coach Dew.
Hanley says Dew’s nurturing approach to coaching and football has resonated through the squad.
“He’s been really good so far, he’s got a calming influence on the group and training’s been excellent,” Hanley said.
“Just with the way he’s implemented his new game plan, the boys are picking it up and I think everyone’s excited to get into games now.”
