The Gold Coast SUNS has finalised its playing list for 2016, adding six players at this morning’s NAB AFL Rookie Draft.
The GC SUNS added rookies, Tom Keough, Darcy MacPherson, Ryan Davis and Cameron Loersch as well as selecting Gold Coast Academy product Jesse Joyce.
As advised in October, the club also re-drafted Danny Stanley, meaning Stanley will continue his 88 game AFL career with the Gold Coast in 2016.
Selection 3 – Tom Keough
Former Club: West Adelaide (SANFL)
Age: 24
Position: Defender
“He’s a tall defender from West Adelaide. He played in a premiership over there and was South Australia’s best player in the state game this year against Western Australia. He’s got great recovery is a very accomplished tall defender and we think he can have an impact at AFL level,” said Recruiting Manager Dom Ambrogio.
Selection 21 – Darcy MacPherson
Former Club: Northern Knights (TAC Cup)
Age: 18
Position: Forward
“Darcy played some good VFL footy overcoming a shoulder injury at the start of the year and did really well to work hard to get himself to the level he did. He plays with great energy, he’s got super agility, and he’s got a huge work rate and a great appetite to tackle. He’s a little terrier of a player,” Ambrogio said.
Selection 38 – Ryan Davis
Former Club: Swan Districts (WAFL), West Coast Eagles
Age: 26
Position: Forward/Midfielder
“Ryan is a half forward from Swan Districts. He played a number of senior games at West Coast a few years ago before going back to WAFL level. He refined his game and is a great tackler, a fantastic mark and he’s been one of the best players in the WAFL for a long period of time,” Ambrogio said.
Selection 53 – Cameron Loersch
Former Club: South Fremantle (WAFL)
Age: 20
Position: Forward/Ruck
“Cameron is a player we looked closely at last year. He’s had glandular fever this year as well as some patella tendonitis, which he’s now overcome. He’s got back into training and has been really keen. He’s worked really hard, got himself lean and fit and has really embraced the hard work. We’re looking to see him play as a tall forward while also spending some time in the ruck. He’s 202cm, big, strong and a great contested mark and very competitive,” Ambrogio said.
Selection 63 – Danny Stanley
Former Club: Gold Coast SUNS
Age: 27
Position: Forward
“Our fans know Danny very well. At the end of last season we delisted him with the intention of selecting Danny back at the draft table. He is highly respected amongst the playing group and we look forward to Danny continuing to work hard and lead by example,” Ambrogio said.
Selection 67 – Jesse Joyce
Former Club: Palm Beach Currumbin AFC, Gold Coast SUNS Academy
Age: 18
Position: Defender
"Jesse is a hard working local boy who has been really effective at NEAFL level. He has good footy knowledge, is a good decision maker, a good kick and prides himself on his skills. We think he can play in multiple roles, including as a small defender,” Ambrogio said.
