While most AFL players would find the task of containing one of the best players in the competition quite daunting, the fearless 18-year-old couldn’t wait to hit the training field and see some of Ablett’s handy tricks.
But while Lonergan may have the physic of an established AFL player, the 182cm Tasmanian eventually could not keep up with the 2009 Brownlow Medallist, with Ablett running Lonergan around the field.
Speaking exclusively with goldcoastfc.com.au, Lonergan said his battle against Ablett in the middle of the ground would greatly aid in development to AFL football.
“There’s not many 18-year-olds that get the opportunity to go up against the best player in the AFL, so it’s definitely a great learning experience,” said Lonergan.
When asked what stood out most about the fast-moving midfielder, Lonergan said it was the combination of speed and strength that made Ablett such a difficult player to control.
“There were times when he just seems to catch you off guard and speed off when you’re not looking.” Lonergan said.
“In particularly amongst stoppages; he just seems to push you aside like you’re not there.”
But while the Launceston junior enjoyed his physical match-up against the renowned AFL figurehead, Lonergan said he was looking forward to playing alongside the football magician later this season.
“It’s certainly a lot more comforting knowing I’ll be playing alongside him as the GC SUNS enter their third premiership campaign this year.”
