The Grand Final of the QAFLW, Queensland’s premier women’s football competition, took place on Sunday with the Coorparoo Kings coming away with a dominant victory over Bond University.
The Kings governed the match from the outset with three goals in the opening two minutes and couldn’t be halted on the way to a 14.10 (94) to 2.6 (18) win.
Several Gold Coast AFLW players were involved in the action for both sides, but it was Paige Parker who stole the show for Coorparoo.
The SUNS’ signing broke the game open playing on a wing and was deservedly awarded the Best on Ground medal for her efforts.
Ellie Hampson was influential playing in the midfield for Coorparoo while Tori Groves-Little was also effective, booting two goals as a half-forward to be named in the best.
A shout-out also has to go the way of Emma Pittman, now a premiership midfield coach after taking on the role for Coorparoo as she undergoes rehab on her injured ACL.
There were four SUNS representing Bond University, with Molly Ritson captaining the side which also included Tiarna Ernst, Lauren Bella and Charlotte Hammans.
Ritson kicked Bond’s first goal of the day while Ernst, who started as a centre half-forward, was deployed as a full back later in the piece after the damage was done.
The SUNS also had eight Winter Series representatives on the park; Sally Young, Mary Ross, Kalinda Howarth, Georgia Brehmer, Taylor Smith, Serene Watson, Lucinda Pullar and Laura Attard.
Young captained Coorparoo to the Premiership win and was named as one of the team’s best players for her efforts in the midfield.
