Gary Ablett and Metricon Stadium are two names that have become synonymous together since Gold Coast added the Brownlow medallist to its arsenal ahead of the 2011 season.

But more than seven years later, Ablett will take to Metricon Stadium on Saturday - donning a Geelong guernsey – his first game against his former side since his controversial homecoming to the Cattery.

Ablett is likely to be jeered rather than cheered, as the former SUNS captain who played 110 games with the expansion club won four best and fairests and a second Brownlow Medal along the way.

The 34-year-old has played six out of a possible 10 games this season due to soft tissue injuries.

But speaking ahead of his side's flight to Gold Coast, recently re-signed Cats defender Tom Stewart believes Ablett is just pleased to be injury-free.

"I think Gaz is pumped to be playing," Stewart said on Friday morning at Melbourne Airport.

"Obviously a couple of hiccups, couple of hamstring [injuries] early in the season … I’m sure he just wants to contribute and play his role for the team.

"I think he went (to the Gold Coast) yesterday to see some friends and enjoy the sun for a couple of days."

Stewart, 25, who is being discussed as an All Australian contender, has extended his 2019 deal until the end of 2021.

"I’m absolutely rapt," Stewart said.

"I’m happy to get (the deal) done and stoked the team views me as a long-term prospect.

"It’s been a whirlwind couple of years, going from South Barwon footy to playing AFL now, it’s been crazy."

Stewart has thrived in Geelong's back six, despite it missing both Lachie Henderson (knee) and Harry Taylor (foot) due to injury.

Geelong will attempt to make amends on its most recent encounter with the SUNS, the Cats falling by 25 points at Metricon Stadium in round seven, 2017.

Meanwhile, the SUNS, will be trying to snap a streak of four consecutive losses and have swung the selection axe ahead of the clash, making four unforced changes on top of losing Matt Rosa to a hamstring injury.
