Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull opened the Gold Coast SUNS Elite Training and Administration Centre prior to the team’s match against Collingwood at Metricon Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Mr Turnbull was joined the Federal Member for Moncrieff, and Trade and Tourism Minister Steven Ciobo in opening the SUNS new HQ.
The Australian Government provided $15 million towards the construction of the permanent training and administration base for the SUNS in the Metricon Stadium precinct.
The total cost of the project is estimated at $22 million. The AFL and the SUNS will jointly contribute $7 million.
GC SUNS Chairman, Tony Cochrane headed a healthy list of VIP’s at the opening.
“Our new home is the final piece of the puzzle in establishing the infrastructure required to secure an elite AFL team on the Gold Coast.
“It’s a huge for our football club, the Gold Coast SUNS now have a home to be proud of.
“This facility is one that the Gold Coast can be proud of and on behalf of the club and the wider Gold Coast I want to thank Prime Minister Turnbull and our Federal Member, a great supporter of our club, Minister Ciobo for their partnership and support of our club.
Prime Minister Turnbull was led on a tour of the facility by SUNS player Sam Day and rising star and member of the Gold Coast SUNS Female Talent Academy Kalinda Howarth.
