More injury concerns ahead of Saturday night’s final game of the season against Sydney at the SCG will ensure the Gold Coast SUNS make at least two changes to the 22 that lost to Port Adelaide by 37-points.
Midfielder Harley Bennell (calf) and defender Clay Cameron (concussion) have both been ruled out of the clash against the Swans, whilst Steven May (hamstring) and Danny Stanley (adductor) will face fitness tests on Thursday to determine their availability.
Defender Greg Broughton will return to Rodney Eade’s side for the first time since round ten and for the final time after the 28-year-old announced his retirement this week. Broughton has endured a frustrating season at Metricon Stadium with an array of injuries interrupting his year, limiting him to just four senior appearances.
Despite appearing to be out for the remainder of the season after injuring his hamstring a month ago, rebounding defender Trent McKenzie is an outside chance to return. Gold Coast will give him every chance to prove his fitness on Thursday, and if May fails to get up for the game then he would bolster the SUNS experience stocks down back.
If McKenzie and May are both unable to make the trip south, Eade may recall Josh Hall to fill a spot in defence. The athletic tall has little experience at senior level, but had played the last two games before Saturday night’s loss to Port Adelaide.
Andrew Boston is in line for another recall after consistent form in the NEAFL. The classy onballer played eight games between rounds nine and 20 and was one of Josh Fraser’s best in the reserves big win over Ainslie last weekend. With Bennell a confirmed out, and Stanley a chance to join the exodus, Boston looms as a likely candidate to bolster the SUNS engine room.
