Dayne Zorko was the victim of one of the best bumps of the year from Steven May in the last QClash, but now he wants his side to dish out some punishment on the GC SUNS.
Zorko was attempting a shot on goal in the first term when he was flattened by a rampaging May – who was subsequently slapped with a rough conduct charge, only to be cleared by the judiciary – but still managed to be one of the Lions’ better players on a disappointing afternoon finishing with 20 touches and three inside 50s.
The former Broadbeach Cat admitted it is his team’s goal to ensure its M1 rival doesn’t play finals football this year, with the Lions already well and truly out of the race for a top eight spot.
“We aren’t going to play finals this year. We don’t want them playing finals either,” he said.
“The Gold Coast have been the dominant team in Queensland this year, but we want to own that title, so this game means a lot to us.”
The SUNS have won just two of seven clashes against their northern neighbour, with most matches degenerating into scrappy affairs.
Gold Coast has been a free-scoring team this year and cracked the 100-mark on seven occasions. The Lions are yet to post a three-figure score in 2014; they average just 64.5 points per game across the season and just 52.5 the last month.
Not surprisingly, Zorko is predicting a tight, physical contest, rather than a free-flowing affair.
“You don’t get to play the style of football you normally like to play because it is so physical and such a tough contest the whole day.
“The team that brings that intensity and hard contest work for longer will win the game.”
