Andrew Boston will be sidelined for an extended period of time after  undergoing surgery on a serious ankle injury.

The 20-year-old forward went down during the NEAFL SUNS’ season opener against Southport last weekend, requiring immediate medical assistance after an opposition player slide in to his right ankle.

He was sent for scans after the match, and went under the knife on Sunday.

GC SUNS High Performance Manager, Stephen Schwerdt updated goldcoastfc.com.au on the extent of Boston’s injury.

“Andrew had a really bad injury on the weekend, dislocating his ankle and had a leg fracture as well,” he said.

“He had surgery on Sunday and that all went well… At the moment he is laying low and it will be a few weeks before he gets back into the swing of things but he will be out for an extended period.”

Midfielder Jesse Lonergan also went under the knife and is expected to miss at least four weeks.

“Jesse had surgery yesterday afternoon to repair his hand, and we’re anticipating it will be between four-six weeks before he is back in action,” Schwerdt said.

“The positive there is he can get back to running in a week’s time. So when his hand is right he will be ready to go.”

As reported by goldcoastfc.com.au on Monday night, Harley Bennell is likely to miss the next two-three matches as he looks to return fully fit from a troublesome calf injury.

“Harley hasn’t progressed as quickly as we though he would, but in all likelihood he will take a couple of weeks before he is ready.

“It is just taken a bit slower to get him back to full running speed. We’re confident he will be back relatively soon.”
