Victorian key tall Peter Wright has been selected by the Gold Coast SUNS with pick eight in the 2014 national draft.
The 18-year-old had been touted as a high draft pick for a long time, with the Calder Cannons product earmarking himself as a star of the future after a dazzling junior career.
Wright, or ‘two-metre Peter’ as he is affectionately known, is a 203cm forward/ruckman who spends the bulk of histime roaming the attacking end of the ground, as well as pinch-hitting in the ruck.
In 2014, Wright represented Vic Metro in the national championships with his best game of the series coming against South Australia when he accumulated 29 hit-outs, 16 disposals, ten marks and three goals.
The Moonee Valley junior has drawn comparisons with fellow Calder Cannons draftee and current Essendon forward Joe Daniher, but is considered to be better prepared for the demands of league football than the Bombers emerging star.
Wright is renowned for his accuracy in front of goal, particularly when taking set shots from beyond the arc. In 2014, Wright kicked 32 goals from 13 TAC Cup appearances with the Cannons.
The Maribyrnong College pupil injured his knee in the preliminary final, which ruled him out of the TAC Cup Grand Final loss against the Oakleigh Chargers and didn’t allow him to participate in the physical testing at the AFL Draft Combine. However, Wright has recovered from the ligament sprain is ready to begin pre-season training at Metricon Stadium immediately.
