It was back to business for the Gold Coast SUNS on Friday morning, with the club’s young stars completing their first two kilometre time trial for the 2015 pre-season.
Midfield star Dion Prestia was first to cross the finishing line, but was challenged throughout by young gun Kade Kolodjashnij.
Senior players Alex Sexton, David Swallow and Tom Lynch also impressed on the training track.
Development coach Josh Fraser says the club has been pleased with the squad’s first week of pre-season training.
“They look pretty sharp, I think the first-four year guys are pretty excited to be back. So great to have them back and get a few good sessions under the belt and look to build from here.”
Fraser is confident Prestia can pick up where he left off last summer, with the vice-captain returning in peak condition.
“He always sets the pace on the 2kers; but he is getting some challengers. Kade Kolodjashnij ran really well, and some of our bigger boys in Tom Lynch and Dan Gorringe performed well so there are some encouraging signs and given it is the first week they’ll be some room for improvement.”
New recruit Mitch Hallahan made his first appearance on the training track since joining the SUNS through the trade period, but has been placed on light duties as he nurses back to full health following ankle surgery.
“I imagine it would have been fairly nervous few days for him, but he has fitted into the group really well. He is on restricted duties for the moment but as a club we are really excited at what he can bring to our side and our midfield,” Fraser said.
“He has been in a system that has been successful so he is going to have some great knowledge to impart to our players and we’re excited to have him.”
