On Saturday night at Metricon Stadium, Harley Bennell put in a performance that was arguably the best by a Gold Coast SUNS player not named Gary Ablett.
The recently re-signed West Australian put the Cats to the sword, kicking six goals to lead the SUNS to a 40-point victory. Bennell also collected 27 disposals, 11 marks and a couple of goal assists with chants of “Harley” echoing around the ground as he lined up for goal number seven late in the game.
Bennell had quite the supporting cast, though, with Ablett amassing 33 possessions, nine clearances, eight tackles and five inside 50s against his old team.
Dion Prestia was again prolific with another 28 disposals, taking him to fourth overall in the AFL for top disposal-getters behind Scott Pendlebury, Josh Kennedy and the SUNS skipper.
David Swallow continued his outstanding season with 27 touches, six tackles and a team-high eight inside 50s.
Charlie Dixon provided a big target up forward, finishing with three goals for the SUNS while at the other end of the ground defender Steven May added to his list of scalps for 2014 by beating his direct opponent Tom Hawkins.
The work across half-back by Jarrod Harbrow, Greg Broughton and Kade Kolodjashnij was first class and Jack Martin showed a lot in his return from injury with 15 touches and six tackles.
