DELISTED Gold Coast SUNS midfielder Maverick Weller could find himself in a red and black guernsey next season, with Essendon reportedly showing interest in securing the 21-year-old’s services.
The Herald Sun are reporting that the Bomber’s have made inquiries about Weller, through his management group.
While the Dons’ have expressed interest, Weller’s manager Tim Hazell from Velocity Sports says at least two other clubs have also made genuine inquiries.
“I think he’ll be in the system next year. We thought an opportunity might have popped up a bit quicker, but he’s still a strong chance,” Hazell said.
“His professionalism is impressive. He’s learnt a lot from his three years at the Gold Coast and I think he’s really at that maturing stage.”
Weller has been on a gruelling fitness program in a bid to resurrect his AFL career, taking up boxing and high-endurance cycling sessions to ensure he arrives at his second AFL destination in peak fitness.
Taken as a 17-year-old access selection through the Club’s inaugural draft intake, Weller notched a career tally of 32 games at the GC SUNS.
