Key forward Tom Lynch was the star attraction in Mackay last Sunday, travelling to the sugar capital to attend the Sports Expo and Sign on Day at the Mackay Entertainment Centre.

The 199cm key position player was on hand to assist with the launch of the Mackay Junior Sport Sign on Day, that saw more than 10,000 people walking through the event this year.

The versatile big-man was eager to meet with Mackay’s young footy fans, happily posing for photos and signing autographs for those wanting to get up close and personal with the tall forward.

Lynch, who flew out late Sunday night, told goldcoastfc.com.au it was great to get amongst the fledging AFL fan base.

“For a regional town, they certainly looked as though they came out in force,” said Lynch.

“The highlight was definitely being able to give parents, who were interested in putting their kids through local footy program, a bit of an insight into the sport.”

Lynch said the GC SUNS had plenty of support in North Queensland.

“We spend a bit of time in North Queensland and our fans always turn out in big numbers.”

“It’s great for AFL in North Queensland that the SUNS have a real presence up there and this year we will not only play our game against Richmond in Cairns, but also a NAB Cup match against North Melbourne in Townsville and our NEAFL team will play the Lions in Mackay on ANZAC Day.”

All Junior AFL Clubs from the Mackay, Sarina and Pioneer Valley region were there to greet current members and speak to interested prospects, while AFL Queensland and representatives from the Umpires Association were also they to show their support behind grassroots football.

AFL Queensland Regional Manager of Mackay – David Hardy, said the record crowds showed volumes at the successful of the overall event.

“Last year we had 7,000 people attend the event and this year we definitely reached over the 10,000 attendees,” said Hardy.

“We couldn’t have been more pleased with the turnout… and Tom (Lynch) certainly was a huge hit amongst the kids.”

Hardy said the AFL community were looking forward to the GC SUNS NEAFL match on ANZAC Day, and said he won’t be surprised if Mackay’s very own version of the QCLASH draws large crowds to Harrup Park.

“The town is incredibly humbled to be hosting such a prestigious game,” Hardy said.

“I won’t be surprised if we don’t have 5,000 strong supporters come down and cheer on the two sides on ANZAC Day.”
