Greater Western Sydney have been dealt a massive blow on the eve of their Round 23 clash against the Gold Coast SUNS, with Giants co-captain Callan Ward ruled out with injury after undergoing a hip operation.
It’s sour news for Kevin Sheedy, who will enter his last AFL Premiership match as senior coach without his most important player and spiritual leader of the club.
The Giants Head of Sports Science John Quinn confirmed the worst for Giants fans.
“If he was to play out the season, we would be putting him at risk of injury, so the decision has been made to take the precaution of getting surgery now so he can resume pre-season training with the rest of the squad,” Quinn told gwsgiants.com.au.
Number one draft pick Lachie Whitfield is set to return from a back injury, while Liam Sumner (Achilles) and Adam Treloar (ankle) will need to be passed fit before taking their place in Sheedy’s top 22.
