The planned surgery means the pair didn’t join their teammates in travelling to Arizona on Sunday for the GC SUNS 2XU High Performance Camp, instead Thompson and Nicholls will remain on the Gold Coast after their surgery, commencing rehab, giving them the best opportunity to be ready for 2014.
Thompson, who claimed the Victor Sports Most Improved Player and the HOSTPLUS Most Professional Player at the Club Champion awards night requires arthroscopic hip surgery, while Nicholls, a 2013 NAB Rising Star Nominee will go under the knife to repair a knee injury.
Speaking exclusively with goldcoastfc.com.au, Nicholls was adamant the untimely setback would not derail his pre-season training, instead saying the surgery would give him a great opportunity to return bigger and better for the 2014 Season.
“While the knee injury isn’t ideal, I’m looking forward to cleaning it out and giving myself an even better opportunity to improve over the summer,” he said.
“I’ll be meeting with the specialist over the next two days, and after spending some time with the family recovering from the surgery then I’ll be back up on the coast to begin my preparations for 2014 on Monday.”
